Nigeria’s banking sector has witnessed real transformation in recent years owing to the regulator’s intervention. The going reform in financial sector has sharpened the industry and engendered increased competition among players
The reform also led to establishment of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), a unique institution that combines buying non-performing loans (NPLs) with loan restructurings and recapitalizing troubled financial institution.
Being desirous of growing the real sector of the economy, the CBN set up sizable intervention funds to support credit to the private sector. Inspite of these interventions, the real sector is still groping with various challenges as funds are hardly adequate to support real sector growth to upscale industrial capacity utilization.
It is in the light of these, that the NBA Section on Business Law Committee on Banking, Finance & Insolvency is organizing a one – day Conference on “Banks as catalysts for the transformation and sustainable growth of the ailing real sector in Nigeria” to discuss ways in which the banks can contribute to funding the real sector for economic growth and development as well as for improved contribution to the country’s GDP.
